Catering
The weekend is B&B only, with breakfast provided Saturday & Sunday mornings. You will need to provide your own lunches and Friday/Saturday evening meals but there's a well equipped self-catering kitchen where you're welcome to prepare your own food. There are Tesco and Sainsbury's supermarkets a short drive away in Lydney and Chepstow and a pub that does excellent (if rather pricey) food.
Event Schedule (provisional)
| Friday | from 5pm | castle open for checking in |
| 9pm - 2am | evening game | |
| Saturday | 10am - 5pm | clan/coterie meetings |
| 9pm - 2am | evening game | |
| Sunday | 1pm | check out |
During the day on Saturday and on Sunday morning it is usual for clans and coteries to meet up for plotting, scheming and other nefarious purposes. Rooms will be set aside for these meetings but those not involved at any particular time are welcome to bring and run their own tabletop games. Alternatively you may leave the castle to explore the local area or nearby towns of Chepstow and Monmouth.
Venue
Though it poses as a Youth Hostel these days, the castle was built in 1206 and at various times has been an armory, a royal hunting lodge and a prison. Accomodation is in bunk rooms (bedding provided) and we will be largely self-catering. The bad news is that the castle can only hold 70 people so you will need to book early to ensure a place. Here's a link to a page of pics taken on a visit in August 2004.
Getting There
St Briavels is a small village on the Gloucester side of the Welsh border.
From the south, head for the older of the two Severn Bridges (M48) and at the first junction over the bridge, turn north onto the A466, then at the next roundabout take the third exit onto the A48 for Chepstow. Follow the A48 till about half a mile after it crosses the river Wye then take the first left (B4228).You will follow this road as it winds along the Wye valley for about 8 miles. Take care at Tutshill where the B4228 makes a sharp right at the first of a double roundabout (signposted to St Briavel's before the turn). About 7 miles after Tutshill, turn off to the left at the junction signed for St Briavels (High St), ignoring earlier signs for St Briavel's Common (you need to watch out - the turn off is poorly signposted and quite tight). Follow the High Street till it starts to bend round to the right and take the next left (Church St). The Castle is on the left.
From the Midlands and north, head for Gloucester and take the A48 round to the north of the city. Follow the A48 south-west along the Severn valley as far as Lydney then turn right onto the B4231. Follow this till it meets the B4228 (turn left), follow this road south for about 2 miles then turn off to the right signed for St Briavels (East St). Follow East St till it branches right into Church St. The Castle is on the left.
