So, how do we make sound effects, and make them loud enough for people to hear?

Our sensor generates tones from the PIC itself. The PIC then drives a piezo sounder in the box and because this sometimes isn't loud enough, we provide a socket that you can plug an earpiece into - this being closer to your ear, you should then be able tell when you're taking hits!

Our emitter circuits use one of two methods:

ISD Sound chip

This chip (the ISD2532) can have up to 32 seconds of pre-recorded .wav files on it. It is driven by the PIC to select and play the appropriate sound effect i.e. pull the trigger, it plays a gunshot sound (bang!), press the grenade fire button, it plays a grenade fire sound (BANG!), pull the trigger when you're out of ammo, it plays the out of ammo sound (click).

Simple sound chips

These are not supplied by us, you'll have to get one yourself (out of toy pistols, games etc). Our emitter circuits will drive one by providing a simple on/off signal to it, so it'll play whatever sound it plays when it's switched on. Simple.

Amplifiers

Of course, once the sound effect is playing, other people within a reasonable range need to know you've fired your gun, pressed the self destruct button etc. So the sound effect has to be amplified and put out through a speaker that will fit inside the gun body.

See downloads page for circuit schematics to build an amplifier board
